Truscott records shock win to take the title

New Commonwealth Featherweight Champion Paul Truscott PAUL Truscott is the new Commonwealth featherweight title holder.

Truscott, 22, produced the best performance of his career as he secured a unanimous points victory over Ghanaian Osumanu Akaba.

Middlesbrough-based Truscott got the decision over 12 hard-fought rounds at the Eston Sports Academy in front of his home supporters.

He had been dismissed as having no chance against his powerful opponent, who even taunted Truscott pre-fight by saying this would be 'an easy fight'.

But Truscott rammed those words back down Akaba's throat with a determined, spirited effort before he sank to the canvas in delight as he got the decision.

"I've proved them all wrong," said an emotional Truscott, who had tears in his eyes after the contest.
