History
Starting in 1998 with the World Tenpin Masters, Matchroom Sport has developed televised tenpin into a high-quality, high-octane product that has a global reach well ahead of its nearest rivals.
The Masters, which ran up until 2009, was joined by the Weber Cup in 2000 and that event has expanded exponentially year on year. Using the tried and trusted concept of golf’s Ryder Cup, the Weber pits two teams representing the USA and Europe against each other over three days in a series of singles and doubles matches.
Named after American bowling legend Dick Weber, the tournament features all the major stars of the European circuit as well as the big names from America’s PBA Tour, including Weber’s son Pete.
Always innovative, Matchroom Sport has pioneered a revolutionary approach to the televising of this popular family sport. Rather than a traditional bowling centre venue, the Weber Cup takes place on a single elevated lane surrounded on by up to 600 spectators lining each side of the lane.
With Asia increasingly becoming a major market for bowling, Matchroom Sport is looking to develop the Weber Cup into a three team event with the introduction of a team representing Asia.
That will enable the Weber Cup to take place in Asia, and help maintain the expansion of this fast-growing sport.
