Matchroom lead the way with two WPT firsts - 06/04/2011
Matchroom Sport, who have lead the way in televised poker since their first event over ten years ago, have again set new industry standards in their poker coverage. 
Recently on location in Venice in their capacity as exclusive producers of the World Poker Tour's European events, they were covering the WPT Venice event from the Casino Di Venezia – the oldest casino in the world - for three days of filming to be broadcast around the world.
Being a city on water, there were obvious logistical issues in transporting large quantities of television production equipment to the site. However, in what was an industry first, the huge outside broadcast trucks were floated down the Grand Canal. The barges went under the Rialto Bridge and moored to the Casino de Venezia for the three days of filming.
A spokesperson for Matchroom Sport said, “It was highly unusual and looked bizarre but in the unique city of Venice, everything moves by water. We looked at various options but logistically, moving the TV trucks and equipment by barge, was the best choice.”
In other innovative developments, the World Poker Tour event in Vienna in March saw the first ever poker stream showing the critical hole cards. The Main Event was broadcast on PartyPoker.com on a 30 minute delay around the world that was viewed by over 20,000 people.
This was the first time that full graphics were displayed and also the first time that the World Poker Tour had ever been live streamed.
