Steve Davis OBE

The Steve Davis legend started over 40 years ago when he first picked up a cue to play on the dining room table at his parents’ South London home. What followed was the development of a sporting phenomenon who took snooker to new heights and established himself as one of Britain’s best loved sportsmen.

Davis dominated the game in the 1980’s when he claimed six World Championships at Sheffield as well as capturing all the game’s major titles on numerous occasions. Having turned pro 32 years ago, Davis still competes at the top level and as recently as December 2005 he reached the final of the UK Championship

It was during the 80’s that Steve received an MBE from Her Majesty the Queen, something that gave him great pride. Subsequently, Steve received an OBE in the 2003 New Year’s Honours List and the prospect of a knighthood at some point in the future does not seem unreasonable.

In total Davis has amassed 71 major titles, been a member of the successful English World Cup team on four occasions - captaining it twice - and won the World Doubles title four times. In 1982, Steve had the honour of being the first ever snooker player to compile a televised maximum break - a feat he achieved in the Lada Classic.

Throughout the 1990’s and into the ‘00s, Davis competed globally at the highest level in the booming sport of 9 ball pool. Career highlight include two Mosconi Cup wins including potting the tournament winning 9 ball to upset the USA in 2002. He also reached the quarter-finals of the 2000 World Pool Championship when he defeated three former world champions in successive rounds.

Steve is also an avid poker player, spending many hours playing online, as well as in major sit-down tournaments like the World Series in Las Vegas where, in 2008, he came 389th out of nearly 7,000 entrants. He has competed in several major televised events and even reached the final table of Sky Sports’ Pokermillion in 2002.

Davis is a regular on a variety of television shows and has been a pundit and commentator on BBCTV snooker for several years, where his love of the sport that made him one of the most recognisable faces in Britain, shines through.
